I could call the object module directly, and I probably will, but does your XML import accomplish the same thing that the product file import will accomplish; that is, does it bring in an enitre catalog? If so, what is the XML schema for importable XML files?

Yes, xml import does accomplish the same thing. You can get the schema example by exporting sample catalog to the xml.
