The Alert and scheduling service of the IBN simply sends e-mails to your SMTP relay.  In your case you may have to enable your relay to support the IBN server IP address to be able to perform the relay.

As we have the next major release of IBN slated for 1Q next year with public beta starting in January, we will make sure that we provide additional authentication capabilities for SMTP relays.
